From The Chief:

As Fire Chief of Glassy Mountain Fire Department, I welcome this opportunity to provide you with a brief summary of our 2010 Annual Report.

As you may know, the Glassy Mountain Fire Department (GMFD) was organized in 1988 as a volunteer fire department to provide fire/safety protection and first response emergency services.  Our District stretches from the east at the Spartanburg County line at Highway 14 to the west of Highway 25 and begins in the south near Highway 414 to the North Carolina state line covering 66 square miles and a population of approximately 2,500 residents.  In 2010 we operated with a full-time Chief, two part-time Assistant Chiefs, seven additional career firefighters and approximately 48 volunteer firefighters, Explorers and first responders who serve at the five fire stations housing 22 pieces of apparatus. The GMFD is a Class 5 Insurance Service Organization (ISO). We are a public tax-supported department formed by Greenville County Council in 1987 and are overseen by a seven member Board of Commissioners elected by District residents.

Chief Bryan G. Riebe

Our five fire stations include Headquarters Station #1 at 2015 Highway 11, Landrum; Beaver Dam Station #2 at 315 Beaver Dam Road, Travelers Rest; Oak Grove Station #3, 400 Oak Grove Road, Landrum; Dividing Water Station #4, 49 Dividing Water Road, Travelers Rest; and Cliffs of Glassy Mountain Station #5, 3 Rolling Hills Lane, Landrum.

We are very proud of our 2010 Service Award Recipients who were selected by their peers -- Charles Maxfield, The Troy Cecil Pruitt Volunteer Fire Fighter of the Year; Captain Adam Brown, The Troy Cecil Pruitt Career Fire Fighter of the Year and Lieutenant Ron Messer, Officer of the Year.

In 2010 we responded to 429 calls vs 418 in 2009. Nearly 50 percent of our calls are medical (207). Additionally, we responded to 16 structure fires, 11 brush and 5 car fires, 32 motor vehicle accidents, 7 mutual aid calls, 78 miscellaneous calls and 73 false alarms/false calls. Our total operating budget was $985,404 in income and $899,911 in expenses. We ended 2010 with a surplus due to open positions which have now been filled and better than expected fundraising. While over 80 percent ($802.0) of our income comes from your taxes, 10 percent ($100.0) is generated from fundraising. For this reason, we are grateful for the ongoing generosity of the residents of our District especially the Cliffs Communities who support GMFD in annual fundraising activities and events. A breakdown of income and expenses is contained in the full copy of the 2010 Annual Report.

We hope you will consider volunteering and becoming a member of GMFD. As a member, you will experience rewards few other things in life can match...to become a firefighter requires selflessness, courage, caring, compassion, being a team player and much more. Firefighters love what they do because they are helping people, saving lives, protecting property, in addition to experiencing a sense of family and camaraderie with other firefighters. Don’t want to fight fires? We have other opportunities to serve such as facility and equipment maintenance, clerical, computer experts, accountant/auditors, to name just a few. Joining GMFD can provide a sense of pride that comes from knowing you are making a difference in the lives of others. Call today.
